UC Davis Biological Sciences Newsletter - Spring 1998
Dean's MessageIn this issue, we highlight the unveiling of the DNA sculpture in the Life Sciences Addition, which was like a dream come true for me. I have always wanted to "see" DNA, and artist Roger Berry captured both the scientific essence and artistic beauty of one of nature's great molecules. The sculpture symbolizes the support the division is receiving from alumni, faculty, students, staff, parents, and friends. I hope you'll have a chance to visit the division to view the sculpture and see first-hand all of the great new programs and projects under way.We also describe ongoing efforts to link UC Davis with the growing biotechnology industry in Northern California. In addition, we feature the new research approaches developed by Professor Judy Stamps in her work on animal behavior. Judy's work provides a great example of the breadth and diversity of biology teaching and research on this campus. We are now in the early stages of planning a new teaching laboratory facility for our students. We'll be building a new home for the many undergraduate laboratory classes that enrich our curriculum. We are trying to anticipate the new modes of learning that are continuing to evolve. If you have ideas, suggestions, or experiences, please let us know. Associate Dean Tom Rost is taking the lead in coordinating our efforts. We'll keep you posted on our progress.
