New Faculty Members

Wolf-Dietrich Heyer

The division welcomed four new faculty members in January. New to the Section of Microbiology is Wolf-Dietrich Heyer, who investigates the molecular mechanisms of genetic recombination. Heyer received his Ph.D. in 1985 from the University of Bern in Switzerland, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, both in Boston, Mass. Most recently, he held a teaching appointment in molecular genetics at the University of Bern.

Kazuhiro Shiozaki

Microbiologist Kazuhiro Shiozaki also joined the section. He received his Ph.D. in 1992 from Kyoto University in Japan, and was then appointed a postdoctoral fellow at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. Shiozaki investigates a stress-sensing signal transduction pathway that links the extracellular environment to cellular physiology and growth control.

Peter Chesson

The Section of Evolution and Ecology welcomed Peter Chesson, a theoretical ecologist who develops general mathematical models to facilitate understanding of natural populations and communities. Chesson received his Ph.D. in 1978 from the University of Adelaide in Australia. Previously, he was a senior fellow at Australian National University in Canberra, affiliate faculty member at Idaho State University in Pocatello, and visiting research professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

David Furlow

Endocrinologist David Furlow came to the Section of Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior from a postdoctoral position at the Carnegie Institution of Washington in Baltimore, Md. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1992. Furlow studies genes involved in vertebrate post-embryonic development.
