UC Davis Biological Sciences Newsletter - Summer 1998
Dean's MessageFor our graduating seniors, commencement signals the end of a successful adventure at UC Davis and the beginning of a new adventure. For me, commencement signals the beginning of a new year of academic activities and program development. We are in the midst of summer advising for new students and the research laboratories are full of talented students who are learning to do original research. The summer pace almost matches the hectic pace of the academic year.In this issue, we highlight some of the division’s activities associated with outreach. UC Davis has a long tradition of involvement with local, regional, national, and international issues. Faculty, staff, and students bring their expertise to bear on a wide range of problems important to society. We are all concerned about the future of K-12 education, and some of the ongoing activities are highlighted. In addition, many of the environmental and ecological issues facing us require expert biological analysis. Chancellor Vanderhoef often refers to UC Davis as the “fully engaged university,” an appropriate description of the strong commitment to outreach activities.
