MemoriamDaniel Axelrod, professor of geology and botany at UC Davis from 1967 to 1976, died on June 2, at age 87. He was a founder of paleobotany, a discipline that uses fossils to recreate ancient climates. Through his innovative research, Axelrod documented the evolution of North America’s grasslands, central prairies, deserts, and chaparral. An internationally recognized paleoecologist, Axelrod received many awards and honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.Professor Emeritus Paul Hansche died on April 3. Hansche was a UC Davis faculty member in the genetics and pomology departments from 1963 to 1992 and served as the genetics department chair from 1978 to 1980.
