ApplausePaul Baumann, professor of microbiology, was selected to be a divisional lecturer at the American Society for Microbiology's 97th Annual Meeting planned for this May in Miami. His talk is titled "Bacterial Endosymbionts of Aphids." The selection of this lecture represents a recognition of the importance of applying molecular methods to the characterization of noncultivable organisms. The Herman J. Phaff Culture Collection: Yeasts and Yeast-like Micro-organisms was dedicated in honor of Herman Phaff, professor emeritus of bacteriology, at an October 1996 gathering at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. The culture collection includes more than 6,000 strains of yeast, many of which were collected during trips around the world led by Phaff and his colleagues. Associate Dean Thomas Rost received a 1996-1997 Multicampus Research Incentive Fund Award from the University of California's Office of the President to support the UC Root Development Research Group. The award supports the development of research collaborations among scientists from several UC campuses who are interested in research on root biology. Paul Stumpf, professor emeritus of biochemistry, received a 1996 Award of Distinction in October 1996 from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the college. Stumpf came to the Davis campus from UC Berkeley in the late 1950s to establish the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. He went on to serve as chair of the department on four different occasions. He formally retired from the campus in 1984. The Biological Sciences Graduate Newsletter - Winter 1997 |
