Upper Division Coursework
IMPORTANT! All major courses must be taken for a letter grade.
Upper-division courses are numbered from 100-199.
CBS Upper Division Core Courses
All CBS students must complete BIS 101, 102+ 103 (or 105), and 104 in addition to all major specific upper division course requirements.
If you have completed your preparatory course requirements, select 2 major courses from your major's upper-division requirements. Your requirements can be found using various tools.
- See the admissions major listing and select your major and then click on "detailed major requirements."
- You can also search for your department's website link by clicking on the "click here" at the bottom of the Majors Offered page, then look for the undergraduate or undergraduate program/ tab or pull-down menu. Genetics and Microbiology majors and/or courses are changing starting fall 2012 so make sure you are seeing the most up-to-date information.
- Contact your major adviser.
- Come to orientation.
- Look for the 2012-2014 General Catalog for the most up-to-date information. The new catalog will be available about mid-June.
Make sure you have already completed the prerequisites for those courses! If you do not have the prerequisites you will be in the wrong class.
Some examples, depending on your major, of upper-division courses frequently taken by first quarter transfer students are:
- Biological Sciences 101 and/or 102
- Evolution and Ecology 101
- Microbiology 104 and 104L
- Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior 101 and/or 100
- Plant Biology 105, 111, and/or 117.
The remaining units in your fall schedule should consist of electives, GE, English, research, or internships. These can be lower or upper division courses as long as you have met the prerequisites for them.
It is better to succeed your first quarter with a balance of science and non-science courses and allow for transition, rather than taking on too challenging a load (all science) and having a rocky start. See Requirements and Electives to fill out your schedule.
Important: Because your first opportunity to register (pass 1) comes after our continuing students have registered, be aware some courses or sections may already be full (closed). It is essential that you prepare a list of alternate sections and courses before your pass 1 appointment on SISWEB. The Class Search Tool shows you the courses or course sections currently available. On pass 2 a waiting list is generated for most closed courses. At your pass 2 appointment, add yourself to the waiting list for any closed course in which you hope to enroll. Then, for lab courses, visit as many labs on their first day to ask for a permission to add (PTA) number.
