Frequently Asked Questions

The following are common questions

The following common questions and answers are not all inclusive. Sometimes there are exceptions to these answers.

For more information see your major adviser, consult the UCD General Catalog, or visit the particular office involved (whichever is most appropriate).

What is a Grade of "Incomplete" (an "I" Grade)

An "I" grade is a temporary grade, showing that you have a contract with the course instructor to complete the course at a later time (see below). Students may request an "I" grade from the instructor of the course. If the instructor agrees to give an "I" grade he/she will mark your grade as "I" on the grade report.

Minimum requirements for an "I" grade:

  • 2/3 of the work in the course must be complete with a passing grade.
  • A student requesting an "I" grade must be in good academic standing.
  • The instructor must agree to give the grade of Incomplete. Only an instructor can agree to and assign an "I" grade. The instructor has the prerogative to deny a request for an "I" grade.
  • The instructor issuing and "I" grade will provide the student with the conditions for completing that "I" grade.
  • Students have three enrolled quarters to complete the "I" grade. After the last day of the third quarter the "I" grade reverts to a Failing grade. (Extensions of this time period are sometimes given for unusual circumstances. Make an appointment to see an adviser in the CBS Dean's Office).

At the time a student receives an "I" grade he/she has made an agreement to complete the course. The course must be completed even if at a later date the student feels he/she no longer needs the course. A retroactive drop is granted only under very special circumstances.

What is Enrolled No Work Submitted (ENWS)?

It is a notation on the course grade sheet indicating that you had signed up for the class, but did not present any work for grading.

What if the instructor took attendance? If attendance is part of the grade, then you may not be eligible for an ENWS notation. BUT check with the instructor to be sure.

Will an ENWS affect my ability to get into graduate or professional school or get a job? No, neither the course nor the notation appears on your official transcript.

Do I need to do anything to get an ENWS for my course? Although it is not necessary, it is a good idea to speak with your instructor. This ensures that he or she knows your intentions.
