What will you do with your life science degree?

Environmental Biologist? Scientific Illustrator? Doctor? Marine Biologist? Teacher? Dentist? Plant Pathologist? Genetic Counselor? Science Journalist?

Many students in the College of Biological Sciences selected UC Davis because they are fascinated by science and are aware of the exceptional science education they will receive.

Some recognize that there are myriad opportunities associated with science degrees and want to explore other fields.

Others think they are positive about their career objectives when they enter college and, after participating in internships and research opportunities, redirect out of science or into another scintific dicipline.

Are you one of these students?

If so, you are most probably a freshman, sophomore or newly admitted transfer student still exploring career options. It is crucial to explore a variety of career paths while an undergraduate. UCD has multiple resources to assist you in this search.

Information obtained by visiting student resource offices as early as your freshman year will prepare you to engage in a range of experiences during your sophomore, junior and senior years. You should have outlined a career search strategy no later than the end of your second year that includes internships and research exposure, trips to the career fairs and specific advising regarding career options.

The following resources will assist you in your search:

  • Internship and Career Center (ICC), 215 South Hall (530) 752-2855. Whether you have a career goal or are unsure of what you want to do, this is the office to visit. They have tests and advisers to help you clarify your career goals, and they can help you find an internship that gives you direct experience in a particular field.
  • UC Davis Advising Services offers a comprehensive guide to advising resources for students planning for career and professional school.
  • Career and Graduate Study Resource Center , 114 South Hall. An extensive library of numerous graduate and professional school materials, job listings, and general career information.
  • Health Sciences Advising Office (HSA), 160 South Silo, (530) 752-4475. If you are interested in a career in the health or medical field, this office can provide you with information and advice about testing, applications, letters of recommendation, etc.
  • Pre-Graduate School Advising, 111 South Hall, (530) 752-3000. Meet with a Pre-Graduate or Pre-Professional school advisor. Consultation is available for students who are interested in continuing their studies through graduate school. check the eCalendar on the Advising Services Web Site for dates and times. If you want to become a professor or researcher, this office is for you.
